Golden Ruler

I used to believe that loving your neighbour as yourself had the potential to go dark if you do not love yourself, if you hate yourself, hate your neighbour.

Then I believed that loving your neighbour as yourself—treat others as you would like to be treated—wasn’t even advice but just information. i.e. if you treat others a certain way, that treatment will be mimicked and reciprocated. (Like a good kisser who matches the other’s style without… or

like a selfish friend who always lets you down, who you start to let down.)

Then I believed that loving your neighbour as yourself—treat others as you would like to be treated—was a selfish and homogenizing control tactic aimed at imposing your own sense of what’s right and fulfilling and pleasant on the people around you.

Then I stopped thinking about it.
